Tungnath means "Lord on the Peak". It is believed that the Pandavas of Mahabharata saw the arm of Lord Shiva here during their search for Panch Kedar, and this temple was built at the same place.

Mythology describes that Lord Vishnu performed penance at this place, and to protect him, Goddess Lakshmi covered him with Badri (berry) trees. That is why this place was named Badrinath.
